Nissan unveils the all-electric GT-R R32

Nissan has unveiled the all-electric GT-R model R32. Although the project is still in its infancy, keep reading and check out more details about it!

THE Nissan took many by surprise late last month when it announced plans to convert an R32-generation GT-R into an electric vehicle. A new video posted to Twitter by the company's Japanese division fully reveals the sports car in its current state, just before it loses its greasy parts.

As with all Skyline models produced during the 1989-1993 era, it is a right-hand drive example, and this one comes in the two-door body style.

The R32 EV project is still in its infancy and will come to life after an engineer's idea to give the classic Skyline an electric powertrain.

Nissan's superiors approved the construction, which will involve ripping out the RB26, an in-line six-cylinder twin-turbo engine that produces 276 horsepower (206 kilowatts) and 436 km (368 Newton-meters) of torque. Well, at least on paper.

Engine power was deliberately understated in line with the "gentlemen's agreement" between Japanese automakers about not exceeding the power limit. Established in 1989, the pact was finally dissolved in 2005.

In reality, the RB26DETT with its 2.6 liter displacement produced approximately 330 horsepower before any modifications, which pushed the engine to over 2000 hp in some extreme tuner applications.

Nissan has yet to release details about the Gunmetal Gray R32 EV, but if it wants to keep the all-wheel drive layout, it will have to install two electric motors – one for each axle. Maybe from Ariya?

It will be interesting to see if it will have one of those simulated manual gearboxes or if the engineers stick with a regular one-speed or two-speed transmission like all EVs do.

Don't expect to see the project finished anytime soon, as the Nissan it's just getting started. Time will tell if it will remain a one-off build or if it will be a preview of a future box electric motor to keep the old GT-Rs on the road.

As for the long-awaited R36, your guess is as good as ours on when it should arrive.
